Susan Traverse-Delaney

Growing up on the small isolated island of Fogo Island, there was little else to do except enjoy and explore the beauty around you.

I was no exception. We explored stage heads, played on our families fishing boats and had picnics on the rocky beaches.

My interest in creating 'art' began at a very young age but was mostly limited to the scarce materials that we had on hand. A good box was a treat, a fridge or stove box, well, the possibilities were endless.

When I was around 14, I went to our town grocery store and there was an acrylic paint set with 6 bottles of paint and 4 brushes. Delta Creamcoat for anyone that remembers the brand. lol Well I simply had to have it, but at 33.00, it was a big dream. We were not in a financial position to just spend 33.00 on paint, but I put it at the very top of my Christmas list.  Well, Christmas morning was full of surprises. I got my paint, but I also had a bit of budding talent!

From there, I began painting and selling rocks. Enough rocks in fact that I was able to buy my first computer  and pay my first months rent when I went to university.

I am now a mom to 3 and I work full time. My art is an escape. The break from a hectic life.

I continue to paint under my maiden name of Bailey because no matter what happens in life, I will always be a Bailey.
